AMD and NAG release intrinsics math library (libm) to open source communityOxford, UK and Chicago, IL, USA – April 22, 2003 – At the AMD Opteron™ processor launch, the world's leading provider of mathematical and statistical algorithms, the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), today announced that AMD and NAG have been working together to deliver accurate, high-performance math intrinsics (libm) functions for the AMD Opteron™ and AMD Athlon™ 64 processors. "It has been exciting for NAG to work on this libm project - delivering high-performance AND accuracy is often a major challenge, but one which NAG relishes," said Dr Brian Ford, CEO NAG. "After all, what use is high-performance without the accuracy? -- How fast do you want the wrong answer?!" The code developed for the AMD64 architecture, designed to give performance improvements over existing 32-bit code available in the Linux community, has been released into that community as open-source for the benefit of all. NAG and AMD have also collaborated to continue to support and maintain the code for a significant period going forward. "AMD recognized that many applications from enterprise to HPC computing require the underlying architecture to power fast, accurate results. Working with NAG, AMD will be able to provide customers with a high-performance libm for our new AMD Opteron™ and upcoming AMD Athlon™ 64 processor," said Rich Heye, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit. It is planned that further joint work by NAG and AMD in the area of testing and timing of libm functions, will also be released in the future.
