Inaugural NAG Student Prizes for the University of ManchesterIn recognition of the long-standing association of The University of Manchester with The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), NAG have inaugurated two prizes for MSc students in the School of Mathematics. At the first prize ceremony in March 2007, Rudiger Borsdorf was awarded the NAG Prize in Applied Numerical Computing and Kevin Chisholm was awarded the NAG Prize in Mathematical Finance, each student receiving £750 for their excellent performance in the January exams. NAG specialize in the provision of software for the solution of mathematical, statistical and data mining problems, and The University of Manchester is one of the founder institutions of the NAG project. The School of Mathematics at Manchester has a long history of collaboration with NAG. In particular, algorithmic contributions have been made to the NAG Library, collaborative CASE PhD studentships have been supported, and members of the School have contributed to the NAG Council and to technical policy advice. Collaboration is increasing in numerical linear algebra and in the numerical solution of partial differential equations, with particular interest in problems in mathematical finance, and the MSc programmes in Applied Numerical Computing and Mathematical Finance provide a focus for the joint efforts. Dr David Sayers of NAG currently holds a University of Manchester Simon Industrial and Professional Fellowship, which is facilitating incorporation of algorithms developed in Manchester into the library. In future, the prizes will be awarded for the best performances in the MSc in Mathematical Finance and the MSc in Mathematics and Computational Science, the latter being a new MSc to be launched in September 2007.
